Meet Danny Hupp, the head route setter at Climb Bentonville. We asked him some questions so you all could get to know him a bit better. Check it out!
When did you start climbing and what got you interested?
I started climbing in 2010. One of my high school buddies took me to our local crag and taught me the basics. I didn’t get way into climbing until I took a semester-long NOLS course that introduced me multipitch and trad climbing. That’s really when climbing got it’s hooks into me, and man they went deep.
How long have you been setting and what level setter are you?
I’ve been setting for 7 years and am a USAC level 2 route setter.
What is your favorite place that you have ever climbed and why?
Hands down the Incredible Hulk in the Sierras. It’s such an awe-inspiring feature to begin with, and the rock quality is incredible for alpine granite. The pitches are long, the run outs are scary, and the views are breathtaking.
What advice would you give to a new climber that is just starting out?
Approach climbing like play! Try not to focus on developing strength or chasing grades. The more you have fun and just explore movement, the better. Also, climb often! If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it.
What is your favorite Area/Feature at your gym to set?
It’s gotta be either the 45 degree boulder or smack dab in the middle of the lead wall. Love the steepness.
Where do you find your inspiration to set new problems/routes?
I would say most of my inspiration comes from outdoor climbing. I rarely try to recreate specific moves for outdoor climbs, but the movement i experience outdoors seeps into my setting style. One of the best compliments you can give me is, “that felt like an outdoor climb!"
What is your favorite crag snack?
Gouda triskets, summer sausage and cheddar cheese!
What is your current project?
I’ve got two newly bolted climbs that I’m itching to try once the summer heat settles down a little, and I’d also like to get another crack at Dawn of the Dead at Sam’s Throne, weather permitting. That thing is the anti-summer route, so I’ll probably be waiting a while...
If you could eliminate one bad habit that you see climbers do in the gym what would it be?
Not brushing holds!!!! Please please please brush holds. Also, brush off tick marks if you leave any behind after your session!
