Circuit Grading FAQs

What is Circuit Grading?

A New-ish Approach to Bouldering

Circuit grading still involves traditional V-grades, but does so within a range rather than assigning one V-grade per problem. Each of the circuit ranges provides overlap to the adjacent ranges which encourages our community to explore boulders without attachment to a finite V-grade.

Where do I start?

Starting Off On The Right Foot

If you’re new to climbing, start at the white labeled single bar of the Climb logo + explore from there. If you are more seasoned, start in any range that appeals to you and journey from there. There is intentional overlap in the circuit ranges + many opportunities to complete boulders in multiple circuits when finding your projects!

Why Circuits?

A Classic European Approach

Circuit grading is a whole other way to engage with climbing. Originally developed for Alpinist training in Fontainbleu, France (a world class bouldering destination), circuits encourage the climber to shift focus from the grade itself towards the climbing experience (movement, flow, variety of climbing style + techniques) as the focal point.

So What Does This Mean?

Let's break it down.

More Details

You are welcome to jump in anywhere! However, if you are new to climbing, we recommend starting with the white labeled single bar + continue moving through the various circuit ranges until you find your sweet spot!

There are multiple legends throughout the gym. If you need help finding one, please ask us!

Ask the routesetters!  We’re not here to keep secrets 😉

Circuits are awesome! They are found in gyms all over the world, but most notably in the French bouldering Mecca of Fontainbleau. These circuits guide you through a series of problems in a range of difficulty to create a certain experience or to help climbers polish and perfect a certain skill.
